MABS Mazarrón Celebrates 20 Years of Cancer Support

The MABS Mazarrón team celebrated their 20th anniversary on Saturday with an evening of good food, entertainment and dancing, joined by supporters who came along to mark this special occasion.

It was a chance to celebrate two decades of helping people affected by cancer and to thank the volunteers and supporters who have made that work possible.

From a €200 Donation to a Team of 100 Volunteers

MABS Mazarrón began in 2006 with a €200 donation, a second phone and a handful of volunteers. Today, the team has 100 volunteers and is currently supporting 97 patients.

Over those 20 years, the service has grown to provide transport to hospital appointments, help with translation, home care, equipment loans and respite care.

Among its early milestones was buying a dedicated car to take patients to and from hospital appointments. The first charity shop opened in Totana in 2010, followed by a larger shop in 2015 and an even larger one in 2020.

Opening the MABS Respite Home

In 2017, the MABS Association became a Foundation. That same year, the Respite Home was purchased and fully refurbished, opening its doors on 18 April 2018.

Later in 2018, the family of the home’s first patient donated a van. A wheelchair-accessible vehicle was purchased in 2020, helping the team support patients with additional transport needs.

Another milestone came in 2022, when MABS was invited to enter into an official collaboration with the Murcia Health Service (SMS). This agreement has now been extended to 2030.

Practical Help for People Affected by Cancer

The team's support includes:

  • 1,154 appointments

  • 1,105 translations

  • 223 journeys to and from hospitals

  • 1,379 hours of home care

  • 96 pieces of equipment loaned out

Every volunteer plays a part in making day-to-day life easier for people affected by cancer and their families.
